The ‘Check Out Fairtrade’ campaign is here to get a loud and clear message to New Zealand supermarkets that Kiwis want to see more Fairtrade Certified products stocked on the shelves of their local supermarkets.

For Fairtrade to grow in New Zealand, Kiwis need a broader range of Fairtrade products to choose from and better access to them via their local supermarkets. That’s why we are asking consumers to show their support for Fairtrade and in a united voice let New Zealand supermarkets know that if they stock Fairtrade, we’ll buy it!

How can you get involved? It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4….
 

1. Buy Fairtrade products

The easiest way to support Fairtrade is to buy Fairtrade! The next time you visit your local supermarket look for Fairtrade Certified products – they’re easy to find, just look for the Label. Main products stocked include; coffee, tea and chocolate.
 

2. Supermarket Action

Most of us visit a supermarket at least once a week so the next time you pop down to your local store why not show your support for Fairtrade. Just a simple action (such as handing in a Fairtrade petition card or talking to the store manager) can make a real difference – together we can demonstrate to New Zealand supermarkets that consumers want to see more Fairtrade Certified products on the shelves.
 

3. Supermarket Email Campaign

Progressive Enterprises Ltd. (owners of Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown) has almost 50% of the New Zealand supermarket market but unfortunately they only stock a small number of Fairtrade Certified products. Join us in urging them to listen to New Zealand consumers by increasing their support for Fairtrade – send an email to the Managing Director of Progressive Enterprises using our online email form. It couldn’t be easier to make your voice heard!
 

4. Search for the Best Fairtrade Supermarket in New Zealand

The ‘Best Fairtrade Supermarket in New Zealand’ Award is being launched to find out which single supermarket in New Zealand deserves to be recognized for its support of Fairtrade. Complete a quick survey of your local Supermarket and see if they make the grade!
 

Fairtrade has made a difference to over seven million producers and their families across some of the poorest countries in the world. By thinking about what we buy at the supermarket and supporting Fairtrade, we are able to make a tangible, personal difference with the reassurance that something as easy as thinking about the everyday products we buy is helping to make a difference to another person, their family and community.
